Paradeplatz at 7:00 AM
In Zurich, Paradeplatz is the altar of global wealth. For eighteen years, I wore tailored bespoke suits, carried a calfskin briefcase, and traded structured credit derivatives for institutional hedge funds. I had the lakefront penthouse in Küsnacht, the German sports car, and a stomach ulcer that bled every three months.
I was living on four double espressos in the morning, sleeping pills at night, and an omnipresent sense of dread that tasted like aluminum foil in my mouth. I hadn't read a book for pleasure in a decade. I hadn't looked at the stars without checking my Bloomberg terminal.
On a cold morning in November 2022, during an executive committee meeting, the managing director was screaming about a two-basis-point dip in quarterly returns. I looked at the vein throbbing on his forehead, stood up, set my corporate pass on the mahogany table, and said: 'I am done.' I never went back.
The Barn in Valais
I sold the penthouse, put my furniture in storage, and leased a two-hundred-year-old timber chalet in a hamlet of forty residents high in the Valais mountains. The only heat came from a heavy soapstone wood stove.
If I wanted heat, I had to take a steel splitting maul and chop dry larch logs into kindling. If I wanted bread, I had to feed a sourdough starter with rye flour, knead the dough by hand for thirty minutes, and wait for the stone oven to reach four hundred degrees.
In that manual labor, my neurosis dissolved. When you are swinging an axe at freezing temperatures, your mind cannot obsess over quarterly earnings. You are grounded in physics, wood grain, and breath.
The Riches of the Unhurried Life
Two years later, I run a modest artisanal bakery supplying bread to local mountain huts. My hands are rough, my skin is weathered by alpine sun, and I have never possessed more wealth in my life.
We have been sold a catastrophic lie: that our worth is determined by the size of our balance sheet and the titles on our business cards. Real wealth is having sovereignty over your own hours. It is being able to sit on a wooden bench at dusk, watch the alpenglow illuminate the Matterhorn, and feel absolutely whole.
Solas Haven holds my star for everyone trapped in golden handcuffs tonight: the door was never locked. You can walk out whenever you choose.
