The Warsaw Night Bus Driver: Three Miles Off Route in the Blizzard

Line N02 in January

Warsaw winters in the late 1990s were ferocious. The temperature on that Tuesday night had dropped to minus twenty-two Celsius. I was sixteen, returning from an emergency family vigil at a hospital on the other side of the Vistula River.

I boarded the night bus N02 at Central Station. Exhaustion overtook me, and I fell into a deep sleep against the frozen glass pane. When I woke up with a jolt, the bus had reached its final terminus in an industrial rail yard in Praga Północ.

Every passenger had disembarked. The streetlights outside were dead, the wind was howling through empty warehouses, and the snowdrifts were over three feet high. My student dorm was three miles away in an unlit neighborhood notorious for violent street gangs. My cheap boots were already soaked through.

The Turn off Aleja Solidarności

The driver, a stocky man in his fifties with a grey walrus mustache named Pan Bogdan, walked down the aisle to inspect the empty seats. When he saw me shivering in my thin wool jacket, clutching my schoolbag and crying, he stopped.

'Little one,' he said gruffly, 'where do you live?' When I told him the address on Kawęczyńska Street, he looked out at the raging blizzard, sighed deeply, and climbed back into the driver’s cabin.

Municipal bus drivers in Warsaw faced immediate termination and heavy fines for operating vehicles off their sanctioned GPS tracking routes. Pan Bogdan turned off the interior passenger lights, flicked the high beams on, engaged the pneumatic gears, and turned left—away from the bus depot.

The Dormitory Gate

He drove the massive articulated Solaris bus through the snow-choked residential alleys, engine roaring in low gear, tires slipping on the ice. He didn't say a word. He pulled the bus up directly onto the curb of my student dormitory gate.

He opened the front door, handed me a warm, foil-wrapped cheese sandwich from his lunchbox, and said: 'Run inside, lock the latch, and don't ever fall asleep on my bus again.'

He waited until the heavy iron door of the dormitory clicked shut before turning his bus around in the blizzard. I never saw him again. He risked his livelihood and his pension to protect a terrified stranger's child.

On Solas Haven, my star burns for Pan Bogdan and every blue-collar hero who quietly steps between the innocent and the brutal cold of this world. May your path always be lit.
